Efficacy of Bacteria

Bacteria enclose a large group of prokaryotic micro-organisms that are single-celled. Bacteria typically measure few micrometers in length and show a wide range of shape. They may be spiral, rod-like or spherical. Bacteria are ubiquitous and are present in every habitat possible on earth like soil, radioactive waste, acidic hot springs, deep waters, deep in the earth crust, organic matter as well as bodies of plants and animals. About 40 million bacteria are present in just one gram of soil and more than a million in one milliliter of fresh water and about five nonillion bacteria are supposed to make up earth's biomass. They actively participate in recycling of the nutrients by taking part in mineral cycles as well as fixing nitrogen from atmosphere as well as putrefaction. Many species can be easily cultured under laboratory conditions. The branch of microbiology that deals with the study of bacteria is called as bacteriology.
