Before the Second World War there were few radio aids to navigation in southern Africa. Only a few aircraft were equipped with a radio compass which could be tuned to a broadcast station and used to 'home' to destination... often to the accompaniment of Jack Hylton's band or 'Hints for the Housewife'.
